After a passionate speech by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer for more funding for election security, Democrats on the House floor erupted in chants of “USA!” on Thursday.

Hoyer and the House Democrats are protesting against the spending bill that eliminates new funding for election security grants to states.

“It would be inaccurate to say that this is a vote about process,” Hoyer said. “It is a vote about substance… Surely we can rise above pandering to party and Putin to act on behalf of our freedom and our security.”
House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) introduced H.R. 6437, the Secure America from Russian Interference Act, bipartisan legislation to hold Russia accountable for its assault on our country on Thursday.

In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Hoyer said, “With President Trump refusing to confront Russia over its ongoing interference in our elections, Congress must step up and take action. That’s why we introduced this bill today – comprehensive legislation to strengthen our election security, hold Russia accountable, and bolster our alliances. I urge Republicans to join House Democrats in bringing this bill to the Floor quickly and sending a strong message of support for our nation’s defense against foreign threats to our democracy by enacting it.â€
Democrats are doing what Republicans won’t. They are standing up for their country and honoring their oaths to protect and defend us. It was an inspiring moment that showed the current split in American politics. On one side there are Democrats and their Republican allies who are fighting for our democracy. On the other are Donald Trump, Putin, and Trump’s enablers in Congress who are selling out their country to protect this president.
It is not Republican versus Democrat in American politics any longer. The battle lines are now patriot versus traitor.
