Jim Acosta: I wanted to follow up on Sarah’s question from NPR. She asked you about Ivanka Trump’s statement that the press is not the enemy of the people, and she asked you whether or not the press is the enemy of the people. You read off a laundry list of your concerns about the press and things that you feel like are misreported, but you did not say that the press is not the enemy of the people. I think it would be a good thing if you were to say right here at this briefing that the press, the people who are gathered in this room right now, doing their jobs every day, asking questions of officials like the ones you brought forward earlier, are not the enemy of the people. I think we deserve that.

Sanders: If the president has made his position known, I also think it’s ironic —

Acosta: Reporter: Would you mind telling us —

Sanders: I’m trying to answer your question. I politely waited. I said it’s ironic —

Acosta: Which is why I interrupted. If you finish — if you would not mind letting me have a follow-up, it’s fine.

Sanders: It’s ironic, Jim, not only you and the media attack the president for his rhetoric when they frequently lower the level of conversation in this country repeatedly. Repeatedly the media resorts to personal attacks without any content other than to incite anger. The media has attacked me personally on a number of occasions, including your own said I should be harassed as a life sentence, that I should be choked. I.C.E. Officials are not welcomed and personal information is shared on the internet. When I was hosted by the correspondent’s association, you brought a comedian up to attack my appearance and called me a traitor to my own gender. In fact, as I know — as far as I know, I am the first press secretary in the history of the United States that required secret service protection. The media ratchets up the verbal assault against the president and everyone in this administration and certainly we have a role to play, but the media has a role to play for the discourse in this country as well.

Acosta: If I may follow up, excuse me, you did not say in the course of those remarks that you just made that the press is not the enemy of the people. Are we to take it from what you just said, we all get put through the ringer, we all get put in the meat grinder in this town, and you are no exception. I am sorry that happened to you. I wish that had not happened. But for the sake of this room, the people who are in this room, this democracy, this country, all of the people around the world are watching what you are saying, Sarah, and the white house for the United States of America, the president of the United States should not refer to us as the enemy of the people. His own daughter acknowledges that and all I’m asking you to do, Sarah, is to acknowledge that right now and right here.

Sanders: I appreciate your passion. I share it. I have addressed this question. I have addressed my personal feelings.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders went on this self-pity rant against the media, with zero care that her boss and she both are responsible for the violent hatred aimed at the the press.

The Trump administration is full of self-pitying, persecution complex-oriented people who feel being denied a cheese platter is the worst thing in the world — as they take basic rights away from other people, jail babies, and encourage violence against a basic tenet of a free country, the free press.

Not everyone can get secret service help when they are being targeted. This is the fortune of the elite. Regular people don’t have the secret service to protect them from Trump’s angry cult.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders could still not say that the press is not the enemy of the people. All she can say is how she has been harassed. She refused to say the press is not the enemy of the people.

This is the same Sarah Huckabee Sanders that so many in the media defended after a comedienne did what comedians do at the Nerd Prom, but because Sanders was actually lying to the press every day it stung.

President Trump has made 4,229 false or misleading claims in 558 days, according to the Washington Post. This is why the press and comedians take aim at this White House, but Sanders is not special – all people in politics get attacked, harassed, and mocked. But not all people are the spokesperson for someone who is stirring up a cult of resentful, angry people with little relationship to reality, and aiming them at hard-working journalists and reporters, as well as people of color, Muslims, LGBTQ, women, and really any vulnerable group of people who are speaking out because they are being attacked by this administration.

The truth is that Trump’s rhetoric has required other journalists to require secret service help, and has resulted in many journalists being targeted by harassment and hate.

For some reason Sanders thinks she is entitled to not be harassed as she lies for her boss as Trump betrays his country, but regular, hard-working journalists deserve to be treated as enemy of the people – hated, targeted and afraid to do their jobs but doing them anyway — because, unlike Sanders and her boss, they value the freedoms of their country.

The reason Sanders and Trump want to make the press the “enemy of the people” is because they can’t handle the facts getting out. They can’t deal with reality. They make up lies and expect people to believe them even when their own eyes and ears saw and heard differently. They can’t deal with reality because Donald Trump is hiding something.

This is the language of totalitarian dictators.
