If Democrats take back the House, Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is ready to hit the ground running to get the truth on Russia while working to advance the Democratic “For the People” agenda on health care, better wages and cleaning up the corruption in D.C., she told PoliticusUSA’s Sarah Jones in an exclusive interview.
“The point is, Sarah is to seek the truth and it’s been so disappointing that the Republicans did not even want to know the truth about the Republicans, the Russians disrupting, the Republicans do not want to know the truth about the Russian disrupting our elections,” the Democratic Leader said. “You would think they would at least share that value of the integrity of our elections, but they don’t.”
Sarah Jones: the Republican legislative process has been chaotic and an overall failure. They didn’t seem to have a plan when trump took office. Do you intend to hit the ground running if Democrats take back the House?
Nancy Pelosi: Yes, indeed, we. We will continue the work that we’ve had to bring this closer to universal access, to quality, affordable healthcare, and affordable. I emphasize that word again. That’s part of our “For the People.” Lower health costs.
We will do as we did when we won the last time — right away, to raise the minimum wage, so people see that connection between their economic security and the role of big, dark money, special interest money in politics.
Sarah Jones: Given the corruption of Trump and the Trump administration, how important is oversight and if Democrats take back the house and how will you divide your energy between oversight and legislating?
Nancy Pelosi: The point is, Sarah is to seek the truth. And it’s been so disappointing that the Republicans did not even want to know the truth about the Republicans, excuse me, the Russians disrupting, the Republicans do not want to know the truth about the Russian disrupting our elections.
You would think they would at least share that value of the integrity of our elections, but they don’t.
And so what we will do is seek the truth in a lot of that is oversight through the power of subpoena, that we would then have. And we of course have to operate on a couple of fronts.
One is to have a positive agenda, to go forward on the first day to pass a bill that will have a feel more open Congress instead of the most close in history, an open Congress that has transparency, that was a do so in a way that unifies a country to find common ground where we can and not — and stand our ground when we can’t.
On the positive side, will move forward with that and most public, the American people from what we’re hearing from them, and I’ve always been the case, are concerned about their financial stability and we have to address that concern and some other issues.
Democrats need to uphold the rule of law, which means that the facts come before the conclusion.
Unlike Republicans, Democrats must responsibly use the power of the subpoena if they get the House back, in order to find the truth about President Trump and Russia.
Republicans would love for Nancy Pelosi to talk about impeaching Trump, because riling up Trump’s base with persecution claims is all they have. They’re already trying to use this idea as a get out the vote tool to help their floundering House Republicans, but in reality, Nancy Pelosi is too smart for them. They’re trying to troll her, but she’s not biting.
It would also be a mistake for Democrats to bank everything on the Russia investigation, even though there is certainly a there there. A smart leader will have a legislative agenda to actually help people, not just an “against Trump” agenda. Remember what happened to Republicans in 2010 when all they stood for was Against Obama.
Republicans can’t be trusted with the power of the House; they refuse to stand up for the people or protect this country, even though they swore an oath to defend our country.
Nancy Pelosi has shown before that she can hit the ground running and she again has an agenda crafted around making the lives of every day Americans better, as well as a commitment to using the power of the gavel to find the truth about Trump Russia.
The American people desperately need grown ups to be in charge instead of the frat boys of the Republican Party, who at the very least enabled possible treason by refusing to use their power to investigate what appears to be the most horrifying crime committed by a president and his party against their own country — all because it served them to do so.
The vow Pelosi made isn’t radical – it is, in fact, what we should have been hearing from Republicans. All of our representatives should want the truth about the Russians hacking our elections.
