Tom Steyer Says Pelosi is Wrong About Trump Impeachment

Billionaire Tom Steyer, a major Democratic donor, said he believes that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is incorrect for saying his push to impeach President Trump is hurting Democratic candidates and helping Republicans in this year’s midterm elections.

Tom Steyer On The Case To Impeach Trump: It’s The Corruption, Stupid”

Steyer’s comments came during an interview with BuzzFeed News on Sunday night. He said he believes Trump should be impeached if Democrats take over control of the House of Representatives because the president is “reckless and dangerous and lawless.”

“This is a historic time,” Steyer said during the podcast. “If you step back for one second and think about this president, the most corrupt president in American history, somebody who is breaking the law on a daily basis.”

Steyer said that Trump is committing crimes every day, and that the evidence “is in plain sight” because the president is being paid by foreign governments.

“In the Constitution, it says that the president cannot take any payment whatsoever from a foreign government — for obvious reasons. I mean, you can’t have the president taking money from a foreign government, which would mean that he might … do what’s right for them instead of what’s right for the American people. He does that on a daily basis. We don’t need Mr. Mueller to tell us that,” Steyer said.

Pelosi warned Democrats earlier this year against pursuing impeachment efforts against Trump, saying it could hurt the party’s chances in the midterm elections.

“On the political side I think it’s a gift to the Republicans,” she said of impeachment in April. “We want to talk about what they’re doing to undermine working families in our country and what we are doing to increase their payrolls and lower their costs.”

Steyer has spent many millions of dollars in his efforts to impeach Trump, Earlier this year he also held a series of town halls throughout the country, which led some observers to say that he may run for president in 2020.

He said during the interview Sunday that he will wait to decide on his future until after the midterm elections in November.

“I will definitely be working full time the day after this midterm election for social justice,” Steyer said. “The question is: What can I do that will be the most impactful and positive?…I don’t know what’s going to happen on Election Day in the midterms, and it’s going to change a lot.”

Also on Sunday former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said a new Democratic Congress should impeach Trump.

“I think that’s something we ought to look at,” McAuliffe said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” when asked by host Jake Tapper whether Trump should be impeached.

“If President Clinton or President Obama had gone to Helsinki and done what President Trump had done, you would already have impeachment hearings going on,” he added.
