NRA Candidates Lost — Parkland Students Send ‘Thoughts and Prayers’

After Tuesday’s midterm elections were over, Parkland shooting survivor Jaclyn Corin pointed out on Twitter that a record number of NRA-backed candidates (27) were defeated.

“More NRA-backed politicians lost their seats last night than ever before. We are winning. And we’re not going anywhere, @NRA”

Other Parkland shooting survivors took to Twitter on Tuesday night and Wednesday to rip the NRA and NRA-backed candidates who were defeated in Tuesday’s elections. David Hogg’s sister Lauren sent them her thoughts and prayers.

Sending my thoughts and prayers to every NRA backed politician tonight. (;”

Lauren, Jaclyn and David have all become famous since February due to their activism against gun violence. On Valentine’s Day 17 students and teachers were shot to death in the school they were attending, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

One prominent NRA-backed member of Congress to fall on Tuesday was GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia.

Her northern Virginia district had been dominated by Republicans since the 1950s. And Comstock had always received an “A” rating from the NRA, a fact not lost on the students.

“Bye @BarbaraComstock :),” tweeted David Hogg.

Hogg said he and other protesters once walked passed Comstock’s office and “her staffers saw us and slammed the door.”

The Parkland students have been the driving force in the “March for Our Lives” rallies all over the United States that drew hundreds of thousands of protesters.

They also organized a powerful two-month, summer bus tour for the purpose of getting out the youth vote on Tuesday, and it appears to have worked. Turnout rates among voters under the age of 30 were the highest they have ever been.

A common theme among all Parkland student survivors is outrage at what they consider “business as usual.” Many politicians say the right things after every shooting but then do not follow up their words with actions.

The students have been especially upset by the hypocritical statements made by NRA-backed politicians who always offer their “thoughts and prayers” to gun violence victims and their families after every horrific shooting.

Fred Guttenberg, the father of slain Parkland student Jamie Guttenberg, tweeted, “Overall, this country chose to move in the direction of gun safety.”

Parkland survivor Delaney Tarr had this to add: “So i’m definitely excited to see what 2020 is gonna look like…”

Concerning the outcome of Tuesday’s elections, Corin said:

“It is kind of the culmination of everything we’ve been working for. This is truly the moment that young people are going to make the difference in this country.”

If this year’s midterm results are an indication of things to come in the future then Jaclyn Corin’s prediction is absolutely correct. Change must come, and it is the young people who “are going to make the difference in this country.”
