After emerging from a closed-door congressional hearing, former FBI Director James Comey unloaded on Trump for his “rat” tweet and called on the American people to reject Trump and speak out.
Comey said, “It undermines the rule of law. This is the president of the United States calling a witness who is cooperated with his own justice a rat. Say that again to yourself at home and remind yourself where we have ended up. This is not about Republicans and Democrats. This is about, what does it mean to be an American? What are the things that we care about? Above our policy disputes, which are important, there’s a set of values that represent the glue of this country, and they are under attack by things just like that. We have to stop being numb to it whether you are Republican or Democrat. You need to stand on your feet, overcome your shame and say something.”

James Comey is telling America never to accept what Trump is doing. The former FBI director was right. This isn’t about Republicans and Democrats. It’s about standing up for American values. When little girls are dying on the border because this president won’t open the ports of entry fully so that refugees can seek asylum, that’s un-American. When a president is so obviously on the take from foreign governments that he covers up their murder of a US resident, that’s un-American. When a president undermines the rule of law on a daily basis, that’s un-American.
Donald Trump is un-American. Voters took a big step on election day by putting Democrats in charge of the House, but we should never accept a lie as just another Trump lie, or an attack on the norms of our government and society as just another attack.
Americans are fighting for their country, and those who stay silent are only helping Donald Trump.
