Democrats are talking about impeachment with a new urgency, as they have changed their timeline and might not wait for Mueller’s report before they move to impeach Trump.
Natasha Bertrand of The Atlantic reported, “Attorney General nominee Bill Barr’s refusal to commit to providing Mueller’s findings to Congress and to the public, combined with BuzzFeed’s implication that the president committed a felony while in office, has given Democrats a new sense of urgency—and they won’t necessarily wait to hold Trump accountable, I’m told, if they conclude that he knowingly obstructed justice to hide his involvement in business negotiations with the Kremlin during the election.”
Democrats might not have enough time to wait for Mueller
Rep. Adam Schiff perfectly summed up why Democrats might not be able to wait for Mueller.
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Rep. Schiff said, “It is now alleged that the President of the United States directed Michael Cohen to lie under oath to Congress about these matters in an effort to impede the investigation and to cover up his business dealings with Russia. These allegations may prove unfounded, but, if true, they would constitute both the subornation of perjury as well as obstruction of justice. Our committee is already working to secure additional witness testimony and documents related to the Trump Tower Moscow deal and other investigative matters. As a counterintelligence concern of the greatest magnitude, and given that these alleged efforts were intended to interfere with our investigation, our Committee is determined to get to the bottom of this and follow the evidence wherever it may lead.”
Democrats may use the conclusions of their own investigations and not wait for supporting evidence from Mueller before they begin an impeachment investigation. Trump’s impeachable offenses are ongoing. Time is of the essence. The longer Trump stays in office, the more crimes he will commit.
Democrats wanted to take their time, but the extreme criminality of Trump may put them on the impeach path sooner than they expected.
