Inside Chuck Schumer’s Plan to Take Down Mitch McConnell

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is putting together a new plan to finally bring down his arch-nemesis, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

According to POLITICO, Schumer is working very hard to bring about McConnell’s downfall, which would be a major coup and a giant step toward Democrats taking control of the Senate after the 2020 elections.

“Chuck Schumer’s offensive underscores the frayed relations between him and Mitch McConnell”

Schumer and other key senators are recruiting famous Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath to run against the long-serving Kentucky Republican.

McGrath, after retiring from the Marines, became an impressive 2018 congressional candidate. She narrowly lost while competing against a GOP incumbent congressman in a very red district. She is extremely popular in Kentucky also.

Schumer is actively appealing to McGrath to run against Mitch, and she reportedly is giving it serious consideration. According to POLITICO, Schumer has been in private contact with McGrath for several months.

McConnell of course is already gearing up for his reelection fight and apparently is leaving nothing to chance. His political team already started compiling opposition research on McGrath.

Today senior Republican Party officials involved with a pro-McConnell super PAC will meet in Washington to begin mapping out a potential campaign against McGrath.

Schumer and McConnell have clashed as rival Senate party leaders for many years. Schumer’s efforts to recruit a viable candidate to take on McConnell is his latest and boldest attempt so far to bring down the GOP leader.

McGrath’s claim to fame is that she was the first woman to fly in an F/A-18 in a combat mission for the Marines. Last year she became nationally recognized for her campaign ad entitled “Told Me,” which highlighted the many glass ceilings she shattered as a woman in combat.

If she does decide to throw her hat in the ring, McGrath could be a formidable foe. Her narrow loss against GOP Rep. Andy Barr in a conservative district showed that she could be a strong opponent for any Republican.

McConnell, who has served in the Senate since 1985, will have the advantage of a very red electorate that reportedly likes the power he brings to Kentucky.

But McGrath does have one advantage which will most definitely help her chances: McConnell is generally not well-liked by his constituents and in fact according to Morning Consult he is the least-popular currently sitting senator.

Many people assume that a Republican will always win in Kentucky, but things could easily go south for McConnell between now and the 2020 election. And the current GOP governor is trailing all of his potential Democratic challengers in the polls.

What might bring about the Senate Majority Leader’s downfall is his close connection — and enabling — of President Donald Trump.

If Trump’s crimes come to light, and if House Democrats hold public hearings for all of America to see, then there will be no safe place for Republicans to hide. And after that, if McConnell still supports a very unpopular president the people could decide they have had enough of him.

And if that happens — thanks to Chuck Schumer — Amy McGrath will be waiting in the wings. The former Marine hopefully will be ready to fight to win over a GOP senate seat — and possibly control of the Senate — for the Democratic Party.
