House Republican Demands Mueller Testify Before Congress ‘Without Delay’

A Trump-supporting Georgia congressman, Rep. Doug Collins, has demanded that House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) invite special counsel Robert Mueller to come testify before his committee “without delay.”

House Judiciary Ranking Member @RepDougCollins  has asked Chairman @RepJerryNadler to invite Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before the committee “without delay.”

Just nine days ago Collins, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, said that Attorney General William Barr would “break the law” if he released Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report without redactions, as Nadler and other Democrats have demanded.

In a letter sent to Nadler on Monday, Collins maintained that requesting Mueller come testify before the House was the only way to “seek both transparency and for the American public to learn the full contours of the special counsel’s investigation.”

Collins also said that in his opinion having Mueller come testify would be preferable to issuing a subpoena for Mueller’s full, unredacted report from the Department of Justice (DOJ).

In his letter, Collins wrote:

Attorney General Barr was never part of this investigation, and instead simply reviewed the special counsel’s final report and has provided Congress, so far, with the special counsel’s principal conclusions.”

“While he can testify surrounding his decision to provide the committee with principal conclusions, it is special counsel Mueller who is best-positioned to testify regarding the underlying facts and material in which you are so interested.”

Former Watergate Counsel Also Says Mueller Should Testify

The lawyer who argued United States v. Nixon in the Supreme Court, Philip Lacovara, said on CNN on Monday that he also believes the House should call in Mueller to testify to his findings. He also said that the attorney general, Bill Barr, would tell Mueller what he’s allowed to say.

“Bob Mueller is going to be guided in what he will say by whatever instructions he gets from attorney general Barr,” said Lacovara. He then added:

“This is another issue on which I have some strong feelings, that Barr himself has a good deal of discretion about how he interprets the concept of grand jury secrecy.”

“I think Bob Mueller will apply whatever standards attorney general Bill Barr instructs him to apply in talking about what he found during his investigation.”
