Even as attorney general William Barr continues to cover up Robert Mueller’s final report, he is launching an investigation into officials at the FBI and Department of Justice surrounding their handling of the 2016 probe into the Trump campaign.
According to Bloomberg, Trump’s AG “has assembled a team to review controversial counterintelligence decisions made by Justice Department and FBI officials, including actions taken during the probe of the Trump campaign in the summer of 2016, according to a person familiar with the matter.”
It has long been a Republican dream to launch an actual witch hunt – not the the one they accused Mueller of waging for two years – on the law enforcement and intelligence community. With Barr, that dream appears on the verge of being realized.
Such an investigation into the FBI and DOJ would further damage the credibility of these important institutions, while providing political cover for Trump.
More from the Bloomberg report:
This indicates that Barr is looking into allegations that Republican lawmakers have been pursuing for more than a year — that the investigation into President Donald Trump and possible collusion with Russia was tainted at the start by anti-Trump bias in the FBI and Justice Department.
“I am reviewing the conduct of the investigation and trying to get my arms around all the aspects of the counterintelligence investigation that was conducted during the summer of 2016,” Barr told a House panel on Tuesday.
To Bill Barr, Trump is more important than the rule of law
If there was any doubt that William Barr is more loyal to Donald Trump than the rule of law, the last several weeks should clear it up.
Aside from publishing a misleading summary of the Mueller report and continuing to block its release, the new attorney general is now blatantly fulfilling the wishlist of the most deranged Sean Hannity viewer.
Instead of being concerned, like a majority of the country is, that the FBI found cause to look into the Trump campaign’s secret ties to Russia, they are further hurting the bueau’s credibility to give this president political cover.
Democrats, of course, don’t plan to sit idly by as Bill Barr happily acts as Trump’s lapdog. If he doesn’t release the unreacted Mueller report and underlying evidence, House Dems are standing by with subpoenas.
