The Pete Buttigieg Surge Continues As His Support Grows For 4th Straight Week

Mayor Pete Buttigieg has seen his national support grow for the fourth straight week as he is moving closer to the top tier of Democratic candidates.

Pete Buttigieg has growing momentum

Morning Consult’s Political Intelligence: The State Of The Democratic Primary Report found “now at 7% of the national vote. This marks his fourth straight week of growth. In the last six weeks, Pete Buttigieg’s vote share among Democratic primary voters earning more than $100k has risen from 1% to 11%.”

Buttigieg is the only Democratic candidate to see his support grow over the past week by more than one point. Mayor Pete is now tied with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). He is one point behind Beto O’Rourke (8%) and two points behind Sen. Kamala Harris (9%). Buttigieg came into the campaign lacking the platform and name recognition of the candidates that the is keeping company with, which is what makes his rise all the more impressive.

The rest of the Democratic field is flat

Former vice president Joe Biden hasn’t announced his candidacy yet, so it will be interesting to see if he gets a bounce by officially entering the field, but he remains the leader at 31%. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) seems to have a ceiling on his support, as he is in second place at 23%. The study also shows that Sanders would be greatly helped by Biden not running. Without Biden, Sanders would be the clear frontrunner.

The rest of the Democratic field doesn’t have much momentum. The first Democratic debate is still months away, and Iowa is even further off.
Mayor Pete’s momentum is real, and his next big opportunity will come in late June at the debate. Buttigieg still has a long way to go to catch Biden and Sanders, but he is definitely the out of nowhere contender on the rise in the Democratic field.
