Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the first two female Muslims elected to Congress in 2018, says the hate campaign being waged against her and Rep. Rashida Tlaib will not silence them.
During an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Rep. Omar said the people she represents in Minnesota are seeing right through the smears and know that she is fighting for them – and that’s all that matters to her.
“When I am in the district, what people know me as is this fierce fighter for their progressive values,” she said. “I’m quite content with that in knowing that they’re happy that I’m representing them and fighting for them every single day.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar said:
So when I am in the district, what people know me as is this fierce fighter for their progressive values, someone who understands that we can’t only fight for individual progress. We have to fight for collective progress. They know that I am out here fighting to free them from the shackles of student debt, that I’m out here trying to make sure that every single person has an opportunity to be housed, that there is no mother or father going to sleep crying because they don’t know where the next meal is going to come to feed their families, and everybody knows that I am a fighter for a more just and sustainable society. And that’s what people already know me as. I think everything else that you might hear in the headlines that feeds into a particular narrative that people want to fuel to silence my voice and to minimize the kind of work that I want to do in driving for a more just world is not something that the people that send me and entrusted their votes to send me to Washington to represent them know me as. And I’m quite content with that in knowing that they’re happy that I’m representing them and fighting for them every single day.
It’s no surprise that the party who spent eight years attacking Barack Obama as a secret Muslim is now having a complete meltdown that two real Muslim women were elected to Congress last November.
Since the two women got to Washington, they have become something of an obsession for GOP lawmakers and right-wing pundits – including the man-child pundit living in the White House.
As PoliticusUSA’s Jason Easley wrote in March, Rep. Ilhan Omar has been receiving death threats as a result of the hysteria and slime being ginned up by the president and his right-wing media soldiers.
But these attacks aren’t merit-based. It has nothing to do with the issues. Instead, this is simply a hate campaign meant to silence and marginalize the first two female Muslims in Congress.
Newsflash for the GOP: It’s not working.
