Laurence Tribe Tells Democrats They Must Immediately Stage A Trump Intervention

Despite the fact that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said this week that she hopes Donald Trump’s family or staff will stage an intervention, legal scholar and professor Laurence Tribe said on Saturday that it’s up to Democrats to lead such an intervention.

During an interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, Tribe said part of this intervention must be to inform the public of what Trump has done and then hold him accountable for his lawless conduct.

“Among the most important purposes of congressional investigations is not only lawmaking but holding the executive branch accountable and informing the American public,” he said. “An uninformed public is in great danger.”

Tribe added, “When Nancy Pelosi talks about an intervention, I think that the most important kind of intervention is not a little chat between Ivanka and daddy. The most important intervention is impeachment inquiry beginning absolutely as soon as possible in the House of Representatives.”

Tribe said:

The president seems to me is committing impeachable offenses before our very eyes every day. When he threatens the national security by giving the power to declassify to his fixer as you rightly called Bill Barr, it seems to me that he is weaponizing his power to declassify as a way of going after his political enemies. He is perverting the presidency. It seems to me that we ought to admit that that is what is going on and figure out whether it is technically impeachable, as I think it probably almost certainly is, and what all the facts are so that the nation can be informed. The Supreme Court has often held that among the most important purposes of congressional investigations is not only lawmaking but holding the executive branch accountable and informing the American public. An uninformed public is in great danger. And so when Nancy Pelosi talks about an intervention, I think that the most important kind of intervention is not a little chat between Ivanka and daddy. The most important intervention is impeachment inquiry beginning absolutely as soon as possible in the House of Representatives.

An intervention is necessary – but Democrats must lead it

Led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrats have so far been effective in ramping up their investigations, winning court battles and pushing Trump even closer to complete insanity.

Over the past week, in fact, Pelosi has completely reduced Trump to a “simpering baby,” a far cry from the tough guy image the president has tried to build since he first announced his candidacy for president.

But the next logical and imperative step they must take is formally launching in an impeachment inquiry – the president’s past crimes and increasingly unstable and lawless behavior warrant it.

Nancy Pelosi was correct to call for an intervention – but it is up to her and other Democrats in the House of Representatives to lead it.
