Republican Rep. Justin Amash – the only GOP lawmaker calling for Donald Trump to be impeached – may have gotten a standing ovation during a town hall event on Tuesday, but he was also confronted by a few angry MAGA supporters.
At one point during the event, a Trump loyalist in the crowd told Amash that he has “spent the last two years failing to do [his] job” and attacked the GOP congressman for supporting impeachment.
Amash’s response to the criticism he has faced from some Trump supporters and even GOP leadership in Congress essentially boiled down to this: Call me when you actually read the Mueller report.
“If you read volume two, you will be appalled at much of the conduct, and I was appalled,” the Republican lawmaker said. “To me, the conduct was impeachable.”
Amash also went directly after GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, accusing him of not even reading the Mueller report.
“I read the Mueller report, I’m sure [McCarthy] did not read it. I stated what it actually says, and he just resorted to ad-hominem attacks and other various attacks that have nothing to do with the Mueller report,” Amash said. “This is the kind of leadership in quotes that we now have in Congress.”

I’m confident that if you read volume two, you will be appalled at much of the conduct, and I was appalled. To me, the conduct was obviously impeachable, so then the question is, do you then move forward with impeachment proceedings? In the Mueller report, he asked the White House counsel to create a false record. Things like that, to basically mislead people about a statement he made, things like that to me reflect incredible dishonesty and really harm the office of the presidency. You see countries around the world where people do not respect the rule of law and they don’t care about the character of their leaders. They don’t care about the ethics of their leaders. And in these countries, all that matters is your person is in power and as long as your person is in power, that person is allowed to do whatever they want. You saw what happened to me from our so-called leader, Kevin McCarthy. I read the Mueller report, I’m sure he did not read it. I stated what it actually says and he just resorted to ad-hominem attacks and other various attacks that have nothing to do with the Mueller report. This is the kind of leadership in quotes that we now have in Congress.
More Republican lawmakers must follow Amash’s lead
Rep. Amash is not some moderate Republican lawmaker. Quite the contrary, in fact: He is one of the founding members of the House Freedom Caucus, a far-right group of conservatives in Congress whose sole purpose is basically to protect Donald Trump.
If Amash is capable of putting his ideology aside and standing up to a lawless president of the United States, despite the fierce opposition of his own extremist House Freedom Caucus, then so should the more moderate members of the GOP.
Regardless of whether it helps their reelection campaign, the country would be better for it.
