As Senators are discussing blocking his threatened tariffs on Mexico, Trump responded by fuming that the Senate doesn’t know how tariffs work.
Trump said, “We’ve told Mexico the tariffs go on, and I mean it, too. I’m very happy with it. And a lot of people, senators included, they have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to tariffs. They have no — absolutely no idea. When you have the money, when you have the product, when you have the thing that everybody wants, you’re in a position to do very well with tariffs, and that’s where we are.”

Trump falsely believes that foreign governments pay the tariffs. This is the president who refuses to admit that tariffs are a tax on US businesses and consumers. The White House thinks that the tariffs are a done deal and that they are going to be imposed unless Mexico does something drastic to appease Trump. The president has no idea how tariffs really work. He has proven this fact by getting it wrong on tariffs every single time that he talks about them.
The president’s comments show that he has no concept of the retaliatory tariff and the damage that it is doing to US companies and farmers. Trump’s basis for his position on tariffs is that the foreign government pays, but the foreign governments aren’t paying, which is why Trump’s stupidity is going to drive the US straight into recession.
