Trump Humiliated As House Republicans Vote Against Debt Ceiling Bill He Endorsed

Trump’s weakness was on full display as Nancy Pelosi got all but 16 Democrats to vote for the debt ceiling deal, but only 65 Republicans voted with Trump who supported the agreement.

Trump Gets Humiliated By His Own Party

The two-year federal spending and debt ceiling agreement that was negotiated by Democrats and the White House passed 284-149. Only 16 Democrats voted against the bill, and just 65 Republicans voted for it even though Donald Trump endorsed the agreement. 132 House Republicans voted against the bill with Independent Justin Amash (I-MI) also voting no.

Trump endorsed the bill in a Thursday morning tweet:

Democrats were thrilled with the deal, as Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Schumer said when the agreement was announced:

Importantly, Democrats have achieved an agreement that permanently ends the threat of the sequester. We are pleased that the Administration has finally agreed to join Democrats in ending these devastating cuts, which have threatened our investments to keep America Number One in the global economy and to ensure our national security. With this agreement, we strive to avoid another government shutdown, which is so harmful to meeting the needs of the American people and honoring the work of our public employees.

Democrats are also pleased to have secured robust funding for critical domestic priorities in this agreement. Democrats have always insisted on parity in increases between defense and non-defense, and we are pleased that our increase in non-defense budget authority exceeds the defense number by $10 billion over the next two years. It also means Democrats secured an increase of more than $100 billion in funding for domestic priorities since President Trump took office.

Trump has no power with House Republicans. His orders mean nothing to most of them. The majority of Americans were already aware that Donald Trump is a weak president. What they may not have realized is that Trump has no sway with congressional members in his own party.

It is always noteworthy when members of a president’s own party rebel against him. It is important when that president is running for reelection and will be at the top of the Republican ballot in a little more than a year.
