Trump claimed to be doing a lot about gun violence on Sunday, but what he really did was make it easier for mentally ill people to buy guns.

Trump said on Sunday, “We’re talking to a lot of people and a lot of things are in the works. And we have done much more than most administrations, and it’s not talked about very much, but we’ve done actually a lot but perhaps more has to be done. But this is also a mental illness problem. If you look at both of these cases, this is mental illness. These are people that are very, very seriously mentally ill. So a lot of things are happening, a lot of things are happening right now, and I will see you tomorrow at 10:00.”

Trummp made it easier for mentally ill people to buy guns

Trump hasn’t done anything substantive to prevent gun violence and mass shootings, but he has made it easier for mentally ill people to buy guns by reversing an Obama era regulation that blocked Social Security disability recipients with mental disorders from buying guns. The White House went so far as to hide pictures of Trump signing the reversal.

Trump has done a lot on the gun issue, but none of it was designed to make it more difficult for people who shouldn’t have easy access to guns to buy them.

If recent history is our guide, Trump will announce on Monday morning more mental health steps and possibly an investigation into the video game industry. Trump, like every other Republican, will find a way to blame everything else, but the ease of access to deadly guns.
