Schumer Blasts Trump For Caving To The NRA On Background Checks

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called out Trump for doing the same act we’ve seen before in his cave to the NRA on background checks.

Sen. Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement to PoliticusUSA, “We’ve seen this movie before: President Trump, feeling public pressure in the immediate aftermath of a horrible shooting, talks about doing something meaningful to address gun violence, but inevitably, he backtracks in response to pressure from the NRA and the hard-right. These retreats from President Trump are not only disappointing but also heartbreaking, particularly for the families of the victims of gun violence. The way forward is for Senator McConnell to put the bipartisan House-passed universal background checks bill on the Senate floor for a vote immediately.â€

Trump called for stronger background checks after the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, but he reversed himself on Sunday by saying, “I’m saying Congress is going to be reporting back to me with ideas. And I’ll look at it very strongly. But just remember, we already have a lot of background checks. OK?â€

The president admitted that he talked to NRA boss Wayne LaPierre while on vacation, so it doesn’t take much detective work to put it all together. Trump is an NRA, via Russian laundered money, puppet. He was never going to endorse expanding background checks unless the NRA signed off on it.

We all know the game. Trump says what people want to hear but always go back to those who own him.

Sen. Schumer was right. The only way to get expanded background checks is to get Mitch McConnell to allow a vote on the bill, or replace Trump and McConnell.
