Trump Is In Major Trouble With Women Voters And It Could Lead To The First Female President

Donald Trump is losing a key group of voters that helped put him in the White House in 2016: white women without a college degree.

As MSNBC’s Chris Matthews pointed out on Wednesday, Trump’s deficit among women voters has swelled with 62 percent saying they plan to vote for the Democratic nominee in 2020.

In 2016, the margin was much closer – though Trump still lost women voters – with Hillary Clinton capturing 54 percent of the female vote compared to Trump’s 42 percent.

As the MSNBC panel noted on Wednesday, Trump’s dismal numbers among female voters could lay the groundwork for the first woman president in 2020, if Democrats nominate one of the female candidates in the race.

JONATHAN ALLEN: It’s not just the suburban college-educated women that we saw in the 2018 midterms. You are seeing non-college educated white women who were a part of that that Trump base in 2016 running away from him.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I want the two women to respond to this because electing the first woman is something to be done. It hasn’t been done yet. We don’t know how it’ll happen, what type of situation. But this situation we are in right now with a president who is troubling to a lot of people, mostly women, but really troubling to people, may help create the opportunity for a woman to win the presidency that normally wouldn’t have been there. This guy may be the enabler as weird as it seems because he’s so awful.

YAMICHE ALCINDOR: It kind of goes back to that Chris Rock joke which is that George Bush should essentially be celebrated by the African-American community for ushering in the atmosphere that created Barack Obama being able to be president. Donald Trump, for all the flaws that people point out about him, he has really I think laid bare some of the flaws of America. Laid bare what people think of women. Laid bare what people think of black people. Laid bare the fact that some people are telling their neighbors to go back to their countries if they don’t agree with that. I think that swell could very well usher in Democrats electing a woman president, and the country electing a woman president.

MATTHEWS: He’s not a great advertiser for male leadership is he?

Could Trump’s disastrous presidency lead to the first female president?

There is still plenty of time left for the numbers to change and for Trump to improve his support among women as the election gets closer.

But, as of now, Donald Trump simply does not have the support he needs from female voters – particularly white women without college degrees – to win a second term.

His sinking support doesn’t just have the potential to help Democrats retake the White House in 2020. It could also lead to the first female president.
