The US had to remove one of its top assets from Russia over the fear that Donald Trump was going to give the name of the top spy to Putin.
In a previously undisclosed secret mission in 2017, the United States successfully extracted from Russia one of its highest-level covert sources inside the Russian government, multiple Trump administration officials with direct knowledge told CNN. A person directly involved in the discussions said that the removal of the Russian was driven, in part, by concerns that President Donald Trump and his administration repeatedly mishandled classified intelligence and could contribute to exposing the covert source as a spy.
Intelligence officials again expressed concern that the President may have improperly discussed classified intelligence with Russia, according to an intelligence source with knowledge of the intelligence community’s response to the Trump-Putin meeting. Knowledge of the Russian covert source’s existence was highly restricted within the US government and intelligence agencies. According to one source, there was “no equal alternative” inside the Russian government, providing both insight and information on Putin.
Trump has mishandled classified information on a regular basis. Most recently, he leaked a classified photo of a damaged Iranian launchpad. Trump has broken the law by leaking jobs numbers, and he gave classified information to the Russians inside the Oval Office.
Trump has held secret meetings alone with Putin with no translator present and has gone as far as to destroy the translator’s note on a rare occasion when a translator was in the room. The White House does not provide detailed readouts of Trump’s calls with Putin and has gone as far as not to tell the public in a timely manner when the president talks to the Russian leader.
President Trump has been endangering lives and leaking US secrets to America’s enemies for years.
There are so many valid cases that can be made for impeachment, but few are as damaging or have as many potential long term consequences as Trump leaking intelligence to nations that are hostile to the United States.
