Texas Sen. Ted Cruz sounded the alarm on Thursday about Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s worsening political fortunes in the Lone Star State.
According to the GOP senator, Texas Democrats are fired up and ready to send the president packing. Cruz said that what happened in 2018 – when Beto O’Rourke came within three points of winning a Senate seat in the state – isn’t an isolated incident.
“I think the Texas election in 2018 is powerful foreshadowing for what to expect across the country in 2020,” Cruz said, according to Politico. “The Democrats in Texas increased their turnout more than 100 percent.”
In some rare straight talk from the Texas senator, he continued, “The far left is pissed off, they hate the president and that is a powerful motivator.”

He added, “If we lose Texas, it’s game over.”
Despite Cruz’s suggestion that it’s only “the far left” that is outraged by the damage Trump does to America every day, it’s clear that the vast majority of the country is done with the president and the sleazy era of politics he has ushered in.
That’s why recent polling shows that Trump is losing the state by five points, driven by a surge in Hispanic support for Democrats.
If the polling isn’t indicative enough of the GOP’s troubles in the Lone Star State, take a look at all of the Republican lawmakers from Texas who have announced they will not seek reelection in 2020.
What all of this shows is that 2018’s close election in Texas was no fluke. The political winds are shifting and that makes it a state to watch as the presidential campaign plays out next year.
The Democratic nominee might not be able to carry Texas in 2020, but it is becoming increasingly clear that Donald Trump and the GOP will have to pour precious resources into the state next year if they want to maintain control of the Lone Star State’s electoral votes and Senate seat.
