House Democrats hit another gear in their impeachment investigation by subpoenaing the White House after a month of Trump stonewalling.
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, Rep. Adam Schiff, the Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Rep. Eliot L. Engel, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs wrote to Trump Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, “During a press conference on Wednesday, President Trump was asked if he would cooperate with the House impeachment inquiry. He responded, ‘I always cooperate.’ President Trump’s claim is patently false. The White House has refused to engage with—or even respond to—multiple requests for documents from our Committees on a voluntary basis. After nearly a month of stonewalling, it appears clear that the President has chosen the path of defiance, obstruction, and cover-up.”
To shatter the Trump obstruction, the chairmen are subpoenaing the White House.
The committees are investigating the extent to which Trump jeopardized national security by withholding military aid to Ukraine, and the White House’s subsequent cover-up.
Adam Schiff warned Trump that Democrats weren’t fooling around on impeachment. They have backed up his words with action.
For anyone who still might have believed that Democrats were not going to go all the way through with impeachment, this subpoena is proof that the crisis in the White House just got real.
