Trump is dismissive of impeachment publicly, but privately he is surprised that House Democrats impeached him over his Ukraine plot.
But while the President is minimizing the articles of impeachment leveled against him, several sources say that privately his stance remains the same.
“I think he’s been preparing for this for some time,” a Trump adviser said, adding the President has appeared somewhat taken aback that his actions toward Ukraine are ultimately what led to his likely impeachment.
“Frankly, I think he’s a little surprised it’s the Ukraine thing that’s done it,” the adviser said.
Trump thought that he was going to be impeached over the Russia scandal, so once he skated on the Mueller report, he thought he was home free. This line of thinking helps to explain why Donald Trump tried to shake down Zelensky the day after the Mueller report was released.
Trump believed that he had gotten away with it. Most other people would see themselves as lucky and avoid going back to the scene of the crime, but since Donald Trump never learns, he immediately accelerated a scheme to replicate Russia’s 2016 election meddling with Ukraine instead.
The president convinced himself that Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t impeach him, but as is the norm, his political instincts were terrible.
Trump thought that he could get away with it again, which is why he is going to be impeached.
