Poll: Nearly One-Third of Arizona Democrats View Kyrsten Sinema Unfavorably

According to a OH Predictive Insights poll, conducted from September 7 to September 12, nearly one-third, or 30% of Arizona Democrats, view Senator Kyrsten Sinema unfavorably.  56% hold favorable views of the senator, who has in recent months received negative press for her opposition to abolishing the filibuster and for her objections to legislation necessary to codify the Democratic economic agenda.

The distaste for Synema appears to cross party lines: 48% of Arizona Republicans view Sinema unfavorably compared to 40% who view her favorably.

The poll, which was released today and included 882 registered Arizona voters, reported a margin of error of roughly 3%.

The poll was conducted before Synema and fellow Senator Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) met with President Joe Biden to discuss how to move forward with the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill, viewed as crucial to the party’s economic agenda.

Biden met with both lawmakers earlier this week, the third time in as many weeks, to try and address their concerns about the bill’s size, which would significantly expand the social safety net.

The plan is part of efforts from the Democrats to respond to the climate crisis, invest in infrastructure, and expand education, health care and childcare support. It would constitute the largest broadening of the social safety net in years.

Democrats are hoping to undo many of the tax cuts Republicans enacted under former President Donald Trump as a way to pay for the plan. The plan includes increasing the top corporate tax rate to 26.5% and reinstating the top rate of 39.6% for individuals earning more than $400,000 and married couples earning over $450,000.

Both Sinema and Manchin have balked at the size of the plan and their meetings with Biden come as Democratic strategists advise the president to take a more active role in talks about the legislation.
