MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace called out Republicans for not dumping Trump because he’s gross but dumping him because he’s a loser.
Video:
Wallace said on her show Deadline: White House:
They’re not trying to break up with him because he almost got Mike Pence killed, or because he did grave harm to our democracy, or because as president he sought to weaponize the Justice Department and the IRS and the military and everything else to hold on to power and control and punish his enemies.
They’re trying to break up with him because they lost so many offices and so many times with him. They lost the Georgia special, they lost the 2018 midterms and the 2020 presidential and senate runoffs and they lost what they thought would be a red wave that would cleanse all of their political sins and you have to go back to Access Hollywood where Republicans said in for a dime and a dollar, I’m standing by my man. They’re not walking away because they’re grossed out by him. They’re walking away because he’s a loser.
Don’t be fooled, if the red wave had materialized, Republicans would all be singing Trump’s praises and lined up right behind him. The red wave never came, and now the same Republicans who worshipped Trump are worried that he could cost them their seats.
Republicans are already trying to sell Ron DeSantis as a return to normal. The GOP doesn’t want to change its product, just the face promoting it.
Nicolle Wallace had it right. Republicans were willing to look past Trump’s racism, sexism, bigotry, abuses of power, crimes, and destruction of democracy, but costing them a midterm election was a bridge too far.
70% of Republican voters still support Trump, so they have little chance of getting their party back.
