Obama Promises That He Will Happily Veto Republican Bill To Repeal Obamacare

During remarks at the House Democratic Issues Conference, President Obama made it clear that he will “happily” veto the 60th attempt by House Republicans to repeal Obamacare.

Video:

The president said, “I hear Republicans are holding their 50th or 60th vote next year [sic] to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act. I’ve lost count at this point. But here’s something easy to remember — if that bill ever actually reached my desk, I would happily veto it. If they try to unravel new rules that we put in place to make sure Wall Street recklessness doesn’t hurt American families again, I’ll be happy to veto it. If, rather than try to solve the problem of a broken immigration system, they compound the problem, I’ll veto it.”

After weeks of stumbles, bumbles, and self-induced humiliations, House Republicans moved the vote to repeal the ACA to the top of their agenda. Speaker Boehner had to delay his own border security bill because he didn’t have the Republican votes needed to pass it. The Department of Homeland Security will run out of funding at the end February, and House Republicans are divided on keeping our country safe from potential attacks, so in order to keep his a lid on his circus, Boehner has scheduled one of the House’s regular pointless votes on repealing Obamacare.

Republicans have never been able to overcome the gap between the public’s “dislike” of Obamacare and their support for what the Affordable Care Act does. Republicans managed to demonize the term Obamacare while doing no damage to the support for access to affordable health care. The health care debate is one that President Obama will always love to have because it is is a winning issue for the president and Democrats.

The show vote on the Affordable Care Act is a way for House Republicans to pretend like they are doing something while accomplishing absolutely nothing. The one technique that John Boehner has mastered as Speaker is the art of pretending to look busy while doing nothing. The veto threat has been issued, so the latest Republican attempt to take health care away from tens of millions of Americans is officially dead before it has started.
