At a private fundraiser with Republican donors, Trump tried to give himself credit for Democrat Conor Lamb’s victory over the Republican candidate that he campaigned for.

The Atlantic reported that Trump said, “The young man last night that ran, he said, ‘Oh, I’m like Trump. Second Amendment, everything. I love the tax cuts, everything.’ He ran on that basis,” Trump continued, “He ran on a campaign that said very nice things about me. I said, ‘Is he a Republican? He sounds like a Republican to me.’”
Trump was humiliated by losing a district that Republicans had gerrymandered to the point of illegality. There was no way that Republicans should have ever lost the 18th District. It was intentionally designed so that Democrats could not win. Yet, Donald Trump sent himself, his family and top members of the administration to the district to campaign for the Republican candidate, and he lost.
Conor Lamb didn’t win because ran like Trump. Lamb won because he was the opposite of Trump. Instead of focusing on himself, Lamb stressed issues and representing the people of the district. Where Trump has been self-aggrandizing and hollow, Lamb stressed public service and sincerity.
The majority of voters don’t like extremes. They like the concepts of compromise and moderation.
Conor Lamb won because he is nothing like Trump. The president’s claims are more whistling through the graveyard by Republicans who don’t want to see the freight train of voter anger that is coming right at them this November.
