Look, six months ago, if I'd said something about masked goons snatching American citizens off the street, and shipping them off to a foreign country without due process, I'd have been told, "They *can't* do THAT!! The constitution says.....", and yet, here we are. If I'd have said they would be building literal concentration camps, I'd have been told, "that *can't* happen here!" I can probably name you a bunch more stuff they "can't" do as well, that they are bloody well doing anyway, let's stop pretending these cretins don't just do what they damn well please, and there isn't a freaking thing we can do to stop them, nor will anyone lift a finger to try.

Meanwhile, NO ONE is making sure these elections will be free, fair, or secured, at all, as far as I am aware, and ETA keeps turning up more disturbing information about the last one, for which the same systems were used. I don't know about you, but if I were doing all of this criming on a daily basis, and had taken pains to break every system of government that might hold me accountable, I would make damn sure I "took care" of the ONE thing that might dislodge me from power FIRST, so that it *couldn't*. If you want to know what the AFP (American Fascist Party) are up to, or will do next, you have got to think like a criminal, they're as predictable as a watch when you do.

As elections get closer, they will begin pulling out all of the stops to tilt the field, up to and including, sham investigations, arresting certain Democrats who are polling well, closing polling places, stopping mail in/early voting, etc. Hell, Trump could even decide to "purge" congress itself before then, see: Saddam's purge of the Ba'athist party in 1979 (there is footage of it on YouTube), thinking "it can't happen here" can be fatally optimistic at this point, because it IS happening, every day. It hardly matters whether what they do is "legal" or not, because Republicans are held to no standard at all, they do whatever they want, with impunity, always, because no one ever stops them, not even the SC. Now, they have pretty much fixed things so no one can.

Let's not kid ourselves here, if the republic has not been completely destroyed, it HAS been mortally wounded, we need to admit this to ourselves, because we cannot BEGIN to address the problem, until we admit there IS one. That is, an election is very unlikely to get us out of this whether it happens or not, it is more likely to take something a bit closer to the thing that created this nation in the first place. I am by no means suggesting we should be "hopeless", but I AM saying we should absolutely be realistic about the former, as well as suggesting we may wish to prepare ourselves for the latter possibility. With the ICEholes running rampant, my personal feeling is that we will reach an inflection point much sooner than 16 months, cause people can only be pushed so far before they break. I do hope I am wrong.....

yawn spare me the doomsaying, elections are run by the states, that is a stone cold fact. Dunce can't do shit about that, if red states want to cancel elections fine, that just means no newly elected GOP members for them.

They aren't going to arrest people just for being dems, spare me the fearmongering BS, don't give the GOP more power then they actually have. You're sounding every bit as crazy as Alex Jones right now.

We're not Iraq, a purge ain't gonna happen.

Courts have actually ruled against the GOP WAY more often then not so that's false.

You're not being "Realistic" at all, you're being a paranoid nutcase ala Dale Gribble.

"mortally wounded" my ass troll.

Muskrat supposedly fixed the election for Dunce right? So if he's against the GOP now chances are better then good this election won't be rigged.

There is plenty to do stop them and it is being done, i'm sick of doomers like you acting like optimism is for the weak. Spare me your histrionics, i'm not one bit impressed by your gibberish nonsense.

States do control elections but I do worry about technology interference with machines or vote counting, and you can be sure trump will have schemes of some kind that will deter or affect the Democratic vote somehow. He is desperate and has done it before. Hopefully there is an overwhelming amount of anti trump voters.

We will, FFS i'm so tired of the bogus Alex Jones-esque conspiracy theories that mid-terms will be cancelled. Elections are run by the states, not congress, so there's nothing Dunce or his GOP cronies can do to stop them. If some red states want to cancel their own elections that just means no newly elected GOP members for them.

Great. Dems should repeal the Medicare cuts.

Dems need to stop playing defense and play offense. Repeal the Bush and Trump tax cuts. Repeal the funding for ICE and a bloated Pentagon. Cancel the F-35 program. Push for Healthcare for All. Go after gerrymandering. End the fillibuster and pass stuff people want. Threaten investigations on anyone profiting from TACO’s tariff insider trading. Propose an income tax surcharge on anyone making a million dollars of income or more.

This is why Mamdani is popular. He aims to do right by his voters.

Eva Seifert's avatar

Yes. Repeal this. Repeal that. Cancel this, cancel that. Pass this, pass that. You do realize that Rs are in charge, and EVERYTHING depends on getting at least 3 Rs to be brave enough to oppose Johnson and POS? And convince Fox and a good chunk of the media to actually tell the truth and tell people what Ds are actually doing to try to counter the damage Rs are doing in Congress and to the country.

As for Mamdani - good luck to him. But he still hasn't won. And, oddly, or not, he didn't win the black vote. And many of his ideas, while laudable for the most part, depend on OTHERS to actually do what he wants. And he's still running against Adams and Cuomo in the general.

Expand full comment
SomeNYDude (he/him)'s avatar

I mean, the article is talking about what Dems will do in 2026 when they regain power. Be bold, be aggressive, seize the narrative.

Obviously. Mamdani is not a dictator wannabe like TACO and a supplicant Supreme Court. He will have to convince voters of his vision, get a City Council to back him up, and implement it. Adams own poll shows he is losing to Cuomo and Mamdani. He is running to stay out of jail. 15 people ran in the Democratic primary. I hope he convinces the Black vote (not monolithic) he is advancing their concerns.

How do you propose we do that with Trump still president in 2027? It’s like blaming Democratic for getting a portion of its donations from wealthy people after Citizens United when the only justices who were in the majority on that decision were Republican appointees.

Expand full comment
SomeNYDude (he/him)'s avatar

Three are three feasible scenarios, all seem low probability now.

- Dems take full control of the House and Senate and remove the fillibuster. Might get vetoed.

- Dems have a majority and convince Republicans to vote in a fillibuster proof way

- Congress impeaches TACO

- Fourth, the status quo continues, TACO continues to deteriorate, and in 18 months we don’t recognize our country at all

No one else is going to save us except state and local government and the Federal courts below the SC.

When we say we hope we will have elections it is counterproductive. There is no hope to it. Don’t give it away before the fight. We will have elections of course. Our job now is to send those people to jail who cheated in the last election or come up with plan to make sure all our votes are counted

accurately.

Democrats of course will repeal the cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, veteran's benefits, and any other social safety net programs. BEWARE THE RUBES OF CONGRESS - The "R's" telling you that your taxes will go up - Nope, if anything, the Democrats will raise the taxes on the rich people in a way to actually collect more revenue. BEWARE the "Rubes" of Congress telling you that illegal aliens will be taking social safety net benefits away from "Americans in need." - That is not happening. BEWARE the "Rubes" in Congress telling you that repealing all the social safety net cuts will allow the "phantom" "able-bodied" brats living in their parent's basement playing video games to soak up tax payer dollars. BEWARE! BEware! Beware!

The thing to remember is that the "Rubes" always "lie!" whether it is the "Rubes" in Congress or the "Rubes" in the WH. As for Josh Hawley - he is a soundbite and has no real substance or he would have had the backbone to vote no on the entire bill, which would have tanked it. So he, and Lisa Murkowski should just shut the hell up!

However they determine to blame the democrats, it will mostly only work on the MAGAs. I'm going to be optimistic and the people who have awakened are going to think this through "fool me twice" or is it "three times now?" and vote Democrat. They'll figure it out.
