I loathe the idea of shutting down the government. It's a lousy way to do business but it's time to play the same dirty politics that the Republicans have been playing for years. Time to get your hands dirty, Dems.

I have a relative working for the government. Shut it down! It won’t be easy, but we’ll help support her family during this awful time.

Members of the military still get paid during a shutdown. Unfortunately, that doesn't cover the U.S. Coast Guard. They come under the authority of Homeland Security so they don't get a paycheck until after the shutdown is over. However, there are organizations that take donations for C.G. families.

I think Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are "dead meat." Their vanilla speaking styles and complete lack of fervor are turn offs. Few listen to them; even fewer take them seriously, since both cave to Netanyahu and arming IDF in the midst of genocide.

Maybe the Democrats should simply threaten to walk on the GOP leaving them way more than 10 votes short. Better yet simply vote no on anything the GOP puts on the floor that doesn't include what the DNC wants in the laws. That is the way to play hardball and God knows we could use the Senators to play some really nasty hardball......

Voter disenfranchisement is the BIG problem here.

There is a reason why 40 % of eligible voters didn't feel it was worth the time and trouble to drop their vote at the ballot box. No matter how they voted they did not get the policies they wanted implemented.

For those who have NOT given up on voting. Those people often end up to vote against the existing status quo.

1. First time election of Obama.

2. First Trump election.

What they hope for is "reform of the current political/economic system" to restore their agency. Agency : the ability to get the desired policies implemented !

To give back agency to the voters a number of reforms is required :

Get rid of Gerrymandering.

Get rid of First Past The Post.

Get rid of "money is free speech".

Get rid of "Corruption".

Remove partisanship form SCOTUS and other Courts.

Get rid of the Unitary Executive theory of government.

Get rid of Monopolies concentrating increasing Wealth in fewer people.

Corrupted politicians too safe in their seats are bought by moneyed interests whose interests don't align with those of the average voter. This is a big reason for nothing changing about the current status quo converting a democray into an oligarchy where ONLY very rich people have any policy influence.

The very rich literally live on Earth-2 instead of Earth-1, which is why they are generally speaking very bad at implementing good policies for the common (wo)man.

My concern is Democrats don't actually have good leverage on this, because the Republicans right now, as a group are fine with a government shut down. Once shut down they are not in a rush to do anything about it. They don't care what governmental services stop functioning, sending checks, etc. They will continue to spin and blame the shutdown on the Democrats and for many of the Trump bootlickers in Congress shutting down the government would be a great way for them to gut even more and calls t getting rid of more waste. Wouldn't the timeline on Democrat voters being able to handle a shutdown be much shorter? Can't Republicans just hold their line and wait it out? I can't see any of Trump's followers thinking it will be a bad thing if the government shuts down.
