Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) said that he did not want to redraw the state's congressional map, but if the state has to do it to counter Trump, they could create more Democratic districts.
Given that we're in the middle of establishing a permanent authoritarian government, Democratic governors are left with no choice. How many times have we read about how Hitler and other dictators were able to demolish existing democracies because no one was willing to step up and stop them. Please, let's not do that yet again. It has never ended well.
The Electoral College has nothing to do with congressional districts. Wrong type of election my friend. The Electoral College only relates to presidential elections, so getting rid of thre EC is definitely NOT the answer to this question.---Jason
But Trump would have lost the first election if the popular vote determined the president. Then we most likely wouldn’t have this existential crisis before us today.
Illinois is already 14-3 Democratic. Adam Kinzinger used to be my congressman. I don’t know that the Governor thinks he can squeeze any more out than that. A third of the state already wants to secede to Indiana. And though it doesn’t seem to be legal, who knows with this Supreme Court?
That doesn't help us with the situation we are in now. Trump is attacking democracy now. What can be done today to save democracy? The EC has nothing to do with that question, and even bringing it up makes me question whether people fully understand the urgency of the situation.---Jason
If Illinois gets split into two states or divvied up among multiple states, the 14-3 current congressional gerrymander goes away. And as I said, this maneuver doesn’t look legal on its face, but who knows with the current Supreme Court? Could it happen before 2026 elections? I don’t know, but I know thirty-something counties have officially voted they want out and Indiana has passed legislation to accept those counties if they get favorable decisions in the courts.
The urgency should have been when Citizens United came down or the VRA was gutted. Biden and the Democrats didn’t address those issues. Instead he gave lots of goodies to Red States in Build Back Better and support for green energy projects. And the thanks he got was Trump 47.
There are necessary short term counter actions to tRump’s illegal authoritarian actions, of which redistricting to win Democratic House seats in order to win a majority in the House is critical. The House of Representatives needs a Democrat majority to set up road blocks to tRump’s radical authoritarian robbery of the United States of America. There are long term changes needed as well. But first the Democrats need to gain majority control of the House, and Senate too (we, the citizens, can do our best to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats in the midterm elections).
All of the Democratic Governors should get together and make a deal with each other.
They should threaten to gerrymander as much or more than the Republicans to halt the ongoing assault on voting in this country. The Democrats have played too nicely. It's time to give the other side a taste of their own medicine. Actually, it's time for an overdose of their own medicine!
The Democrats should make ONE offer to sit down with the Republicans to try and get them to the table to fix the gerrymandering problems. If they refuse or go back on any agreement that MIGHT happen, the Democrats should have every Democratic Governor drop a gerrymandering bomb everywhere they can.
I fully support redrawing Dem maps to fight fascism and the loss of Democracy to AI billionaires who are behind the execution of project 2025 as we speak. We must regain control of the House and Senate if possible. It is imperative.
Why are so many Democratic Governors silent and not following Newsom and Pritzker's lead? What the fk are they waiting for? A republiscum change of heart? Really? Get active folks... NOW... use bit.ly/Goodtrouble and make tons of noise.
There are a number of dem governors who in are in fact strategizing collectively, being led by Maura Healy of MA on the east coast, and Ferguson of WA and Kotek of OR. They just aren’t as visible as JB, since he’s been out in front of the cameras now for a long time. Plus, and I’m not saying this is a bad thing, both Newsom and Pritzker likely have presidential aspirations. Right now I’ll take all the voices fighting back I can get!

The answer is to get rid of the electoral college altogether.
We are no longer in the 18th century.

Why do you think this is not connected
I agree. Popular vote is the way to go.
The popular vote already decides congressional elections.---Jason
At this point, get rid of the electoral college altogether or split the votes for each candidate. The electoral college is not rigged fairly.
Trump has cheated at everything his whole life; that’s how he wins in every election. It’s time to neuter this narcissistic bully.
Yes 🙌 fighting fire with fire 🔥
Great work JB
Absolutely if that’s the way Republicans have changed the way to do things that’s the way we do it.
Alright Pritzker get busy

Do it

Thank you, JB!

Or get ready to dust off your family musket.

We have to do what we have to do to preserve democracy. I wonder how long the red states would last without bailouts from the blue states.
Fight fire with fire.
I admire him very much. Thank God for our governors
Pritzer is correct. Redistricting is not something he wants to do, but when the GOP plays dirty, that’s the only recourse to save democracy.
