Pete Hegseth is trying to find an escape plan to get out of the administration before the likely incoming Democratic House majority can impeach him.
House Democrats are unified, and it is growing increasingly certain that they will impeach Trump’s Pentagon boss after they take back the House majority. The next Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027.
Hegseth is trying to get Sen. Marsha Blackburn to appoint him to the Senate after she wins the gubernatorial election next week.
However, Hegseth’s scheme has run into a major complication, as outgoing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has announced that he will use the first week of the House’s lame duck post-election session to force a vote on impeaching Hegseth now.
Massie was about to force a vote on impeaching Hegseth on September 15, so Speaker Mike Johnson shut down the House early until after the election.
When Republicans return, likely after having lost several dozen seats, Rep. Massie is going to try again, but this time, he expects not only to get a vote, but much better odds of success.
