Mike Johnson had been hinting that if House Republicans got hammered in the midterm election, he might not stick around to run for Minority Leader. It was also reported that House Republicans wouldn’t want Johnson back as leader if he led them to a blowout loss.

Republicans got blown out in historic fashion on Tuesday night as Democrats will have a House majority of at least 50 seats.

According to NBC News, Johnson is done:

A day after Democrats won the House majority, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told his staff Wednesday morning he will not stay on as Republican leader in the new Congress, according to four sources on the phone call.

His announcement follows massive losses for his party in House races Tuesday.

Johnson has also been dropping clues that he might leave Congress completely if he were not in leadership.

The odds are good that Mike Johnson’s House career is likely done.

He may stick around for a little while, but eventually, he will announce his retirement, and his legacy as Trump’s assistant Speaker of the House will be a memory.

Now that Trump has lost his top ally in the House, the chaos continues as Vice President JD Vance took to X to try to save his dead before it started the presidential campaign.
