Those who voted for Donald Trump gave him one job in 2024, and that was to fix inflation and the cost of living. One of the things that Trump did right on the campaign trail was regularly talking about inflation and the cost of living.

Anyone who understood Trump well knew that he didn’t care about inflation and the cost of living. Trump spent much more time in his campaign speeches talking about immigration and getting revenge on his political enemies. In a year when Democrats were a mess and seemed terrified to have a real conversation about affordability, Trump was the non-incumbent default option for a lot of voters.

Immediately after winning the election, Trump announced that inflation was too tricky and he wasn’t going to be able to do anything about it.

What voters didn’t expect was that Trump would adopt policies that would make inflation and the cost of living worse.

The president predictably responded to the public complaints about affordability by claiming that the crisis is made up.

The result of Trump making the top concern of voters worse while making more money for himself, his family, and his allies has been that even some of his most loyal voters are abandoning him.
