McCain Questions Obama’s Patriotism for Canceling Troop Visit

In a taped interview for ABC’s This Week Republican presidential candidate John McCain questioned Barack Obama’s justification for not visiting the troops in Germany.

“I know of no Pentagon regulation that would have prevented him from going there — without the media and the press and all of the associated people. Nothing that I know of would have kept him from visiting those wounded troops,” McCain said.

He also mentioned that he visited the same recovery center in Landstuhl, Germany, “In Landstuhl, Germany, when I went through, I visited the hospital. … I think people make a judgment by what we do and what we don’t do. He certainly found time to do other things.” The McCain campaign is really trying to play up the patriotism angle, because they also released this ad:

The funniest part of that ad is the line, “John McCain is always there for our troops.” What the line should say is that John McCain is there to send our troops into unnecessary wars, and then VOTE AGAINST funding for their equipment, healthcare, and education. Ask yourself this question. Would visiting injured troops even be an issue if George W. Bush, and his number one cheerleader in the Senate, John McCain had not invaded Iraq?

The McCain campaign is pulling from the GOP playbook. They want to distract voters from the real issues and instead turn the focus to non-issues like patriotism. John McCain wants to distract us all from thinking about the economy, unemployment, food prices, and gas prices. Instead he is going to spend time and money, questioning a man’s patriotism. One candidate offers distractions and smears while another talks about hope and change. In this context, it is easy to see why this election is Obama’s to lose.
