Obama Approval Rating Bodes Well for His Reelection in 2012

A new analysis by Public Policy of President Obama’s approval ratings found that his approval rating matches his support in the 2008 election. The people who don’t support Obama now, didn’t vote for him last year. 94% of people who approve of Obama support him against Sarah Palin. The numbers are equally high when Obama is matched up against Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush.

According to Public Policy Polling, On the national poll we have coming out Thursday 94% of people who approve of Obama’s job performance support him against Sarah Palin, 92% do against Jeb Bush, 90% do against Mitt Romney, and 89% do against Mike Huckabee.”

Guess what? People who support Republicans don’t approve of Obama, “Among those who disapprove of Obama’s job performance 7% support him against Palin, 3% against Bush, and 2% against Huckabee and Romney.”

The conclusion being that much of the media angst being raised about President Obama’s poll numbers is completely overblown. Obama is holding over 90% of his supporters, while the people who disapprove of him now, never approved of him. The mood of the nation is not shifting against Obama. The people, who liked him in 2008, still like him now. The people, who didn’t like him last year, still don’t approve of him.

Basically Obama is in the same place that he was in when he took office. It is no surprise that the honeymoon ended for Obama. However, as long as he holds his base of support, he will be in a good position to win reelection in 2012. If Obama can survive something as contentious as the current healthcare debate, he will be fine for 2012.
