A gunman, apparently acting alone, launched a brazen assault on Dallas Police Headquarters around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning. After apparently firing several rounds at the police building and at officers, the gunman fled in the armored van he was driving. He was later surrounded at a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant parking lot in the Dallas suburb of Hutchins, Texas, where a police sniper eventually shot the suspect at around 5 a.m.

Two pipe bombs were also placed on police station premises, and at least one bomb had to be detonated by a police robot. Early reports speculated that their were multiple gunmen involved, but later reports on Saturday seemed to suggest that the attack on the police station was an individual act.
The suspect allegedly launched his assault from an armored van and fired repeatedly from inside the vehicle. Remarkably, no police officers were injured or killed in the attack. The suspect’s identity had not been confirmed as of 10 a.m. Central Time on Saturday.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown stated:
The suspect has told our negotiators that we took his child and we accused him of being a terrorist and that he’s going to blow us up. And then [he] cut off negotiations.
The suspect also identified himself by name. However, until police confirm his identity, this author will refrain from publishing that name, in case it turns out to be incorrect.
A sniper successfully disabled the gunman, and he is believed to be dead. The details of the story will continue to develop on Saturday, bringing more clarity to who the shooter was and how the incident unfolded. Determining the gunman’s motives may require additional time and investigation.
The apparently unprovoked assault on a major metropolitan police station serves as a chilling reminder that an individual intent on doing harm is not easily deterred. It remains unclear why the gunman engaged in this lone act of domestic terrorism against Dallas law enforcement officers. Regardless of his motives, this was an unconscionable act. Luckily, it appears no officers or innocent bystanders were injured or killed.
