Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren called Donald Trump a hypocrite today for his decision to nominate a Wall Street insider to head the Treasury Department.
In a joint statement, Sens. Sanders (I-VT) and Warren (D-MA) said, “During the campaign, Donald Trump told the American people that he was going to change Washington by taking on Wall Street. Donald Trump’s choice for Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, is just another Wall Street insider. That is not the type of change that Donald Trump promised to bring to Washington – that is hypocrisy at its worst. After his bank pocketed billions in taxpayer dollars from the bailout, Mnuchin moved on to make a fortune running another bank that aggressively foreclosed on families still reeling from the crisis. This pick makes clear that Donald Trump wants to cater to the same Wall Street executives that have hurt working families time and again.”
To the surprise of no one, except for maybe his most devoted supporters, Donald Trump lied about draining the swamp. Trump vowed to clean up Washington and corruption. Instead, he has invited the sources of the corruption to hold power within his administration.
All of this was predictable. As CNN pointed out during the campaign, Trump has deep ties to Wall Street, “Trump may not be taking Wall Street’s money, but he has strong ties there. He often cites his friendship with billionaire hedge fund manager Carl Icahn. Trump says if he is elected president, he would make Icahn his treasury secretary.”
President-elect Trump said what he thought he had to say to win the election, then he reversed course and showed his true colors.
Warren and Sanders were correct. Trump is bringing change to Washington, but it isn’t the change that he campaigned on. Instead of draining the swamp, Trump is filling it Wall Street and Goldman Sachs. The people who nearly collapsed the US and global economies are back in power, and it is only a matter of time until they resume their standard activities and harm the very working people that went to the polls and voted for Donald Trump.
The Senators were spot on. Donald Trump is a hypocrite, and the American people are going to live to regret the day that they ever trusted anything that the president-elect said on the campaign trail.
