Rachel Maddow slammed Donald Trump on Wednesday for remaining silent even as the rest of the world appears to be mobilizing to stand up to Russia’s recent chemical attack in the United Kingdom.

The MSNBC host said the recent events overseas combined with the ongoing special counsel investigation into Trump’s Russia ties is “like a spy movie with another spy movie embedded inside of it.”

Maddow explained the “bizarre” situation:
So there appears to have been an attempted assassination by chemical warfare on British soil. The British government is attributing that attack to the Russian government. The UN Security Council is taking up the matter. The UK government is addressing the matter. The U.S. Government is sort of starting to address the matter. But we are in this bizarre situation where our own president’s silence and mealy-mouthed hemming and hawing on this subject is in the foreground, while his own secret dealings with the Russian government are starting to unfold and starting to be exposed by a congressional investigation that his Republican allies are trying to shut down. This is, I mean, we’ve been watching this at one level or another over the course of the past year and a half, right, but right now with this crisis and attempted assassination in Britain – a police officer still hospitalized for having gone into the house of these people who apparently were targeted in this attack. Two people still fighting for their lives in critical condition trying to fend off the effects of the Russian military nerve agent. Now, in the face of this crisis, what we’re watching here from our perspective as Americans – it’s like a spy movie with another spy movie embedded inside of it.
As Maddow said on Wednesday, it seems like everybody – from UK Prime Minister Theresa May to UN Ambassador Nikki Haley – have condemned Russia for its nerve agent attack in Britain. As the Financial Times noted, Prime Minister May quickly moved to “expel 23 Russian diplomats who are undeclared spies and suspend all high-level contact with Moscow.”
Rex Tillerson also harshly condemned Russia for the attack on Monday, saying that he is “outraged that Russia appears to have again engaged in such behavior.” Instead of personally echoing the sentiments of his Secretary of State, Trump wasted no time in firing him via Twitter.
It’s important to note that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has issued a statement condemning the “reckless” Russian attack, but Trump – who rarely finds a topic he is reluctant to ramble loudly about – has remained personally silent.
As Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation continues to look into Trump’s dealings with Moscow, it’s likely only a matter of time before we find out why the only subject this president seems unwilling to talk about is Russia.
