Robert Mueller is investigating Trump’s efforts to fire him as part of his probe into possible presidential obstruction of justice.
Read the biggest developments from Michael Cohen's testimony.
The New York Times reported, “Acutely conscious of the threat Mr. Mueller’s investigation poses, Mr. Trump has openly discussed ways to shut it down. Each time, he has been convinced by his lawyers and advisers that taking the step would only exacerbate his problems. In some cases, they have explained to Mr. Trump how anything that causes him to lose support from congressional Republicans could further imperil his presidency. But Mr. Trump’s statements to his advisers have been significant enough to attract attention from Mr. Mueller himself. Mr. Mueller’s investigators have interviewed current and former White House officials and have requested documents to understand whether these efforts show evidence the president is trying to obstruct the Justice Department’s investigation, according to two people briefed on the matter.”
Trump believes that he is above the law. The statement by Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that Trump thinks that he has the power to directly fire Mueller is the latest in a long line of statements that go back to before Trump took office that has consistently repeated the belief that Trump is above the law.
Robert Mueller is using Trump’s inaccurate beliefs about his power as part of his investigation into whether or not Trump obstructed justice.
The reason why Trump can’t get or keep attornies in the Russia investigation is that he won’t stop digging his own hole deeper. Trump’s lawyers have all told him to lay off Mueller, but the self-destructive president can’t resist making things worse for himself.
Trump is literally making a case for his own impeachment and removal from office. Each attempt to fire Mueller is documented by the special counsel and added to the investigation of obstruction of justice.
Donald Trump is talking his way out of office one tantrum at a time.
