Chris Matthews Shreds The Supreme Court For Being A Tool Of The GOP

Chris Matthews tore into the Supreme Court on Tuesday, hours after the conservative body decided to uphold Donald Trump’s Muslim ban.

The MSNBC host said their decision on the ban is just the latest in a long line of high-profile decisions that prove the court is an extension of the Republican Party.

“The five-man Republican majority on the Supreme Court today gave President Trump what he wanted most, the good housekeeping seal on his campaign to divide the country,” Matthews said.

Matthews blasted SCOTUS:

The five-man Republican majority on the Supreme Court today gave President Trump what he wanted most, the good housekeeping seal on his campaign to divide the country. In approving his travel ban, crudely aimed at Muslims, the Republican-controlled highest court has shined up the entire Trump offensive on Muslims, Latinos and – let’s not kid ourselves – Democrats. First, this Supreme Court gave us “W” by ending the Florida recount in 2000. Then it gave us guns for everyone in the Heller case. Then, with Citizens United, new power for the wealthy to drive our elections. And today, it’s Trump to do what he wants in targeting Muslims.

The Supreme Court has been an extension of the Republican Party

Aside from a few cases – the Affordable Care Act and marriage equality decisions, for example – this Supreme Court has been an embarrassing extension of the backward-looking Republican Party.

As Matthews pointed out, they gave the country George W. Bush and opened the floodgates for dark money in political campaigns. When Barack Obama was president, they shredded the Voting Rights Act.

Today alone, they didn’t just uphold Trump’s travel ban, which had the stated goal of keeping Muslims out of the county, but they cleared the way for states to discriminate against voters of color when drawing congressional maps.

At pivotal moments in recent history, this Republican-controlled Supreme Court has stood in the way of progress. In the process, they have transformed what is supposed to be a bipartisan deliberative body into another hyperpartisan branch of government.
