Bernie Sanders: Trump is Tough on Children But Not On Putin

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was in Kansas on Friday campaigning for local Democratic congressional candidates and he had some choice words for the current occupant of the White House. Sanders said he was appalled at the way President Donald Trump handled Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit meeting in Helsinki on Monday.

Addressing a rally of Democratic supporters in Wichita Sanders tore into the Trump administration for “tearing children from their families” as part of the president’s “zero tolerance” border policy which began in April.

“We say to Trump, instead of showing us your strength by tearing children from their families, where was your strength in standing up to Putin and Russia for undermining American democracy?” Sanders said to the exuberant crowd.

“How courageous he is to tear children from their families, how cowardly he is to stand up to people who are trying to undermine not only American democracy but other aspects of our lives,” Sanders added.

Sanders also addressed a Democratic rally in Kansas City on Friday where his speech hit on similar themes. Sanders is traveling with the new progressive Democratic star, fellow democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York City. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez were campaigning to support of Democrat Brent Welder in his attempt to beat conservative GOP Representative Kevin Yoder.

“We have a president that’s so tough when he’s terrorizing little children. When he was up against Vladimir Putin, he wasn’t so tough,” Sanders told the Kansas City crowd.

Welder and Yoder are congressional candidates in Kansas’ 3rd district which narrowly went for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, so it is considered a possible pickup seat for the Democrats.

Sanders has been touring the country helping progressive candidates in congressional districts where it is believed that his message will resonate with voters. After her upset victory in the New York congressional primary, Ocasio-Cortez has been going with Sanders to attempt to appeal to a young and diverse block of voters.

Ocasio-Cortez has said she is fully supportive of such Sanders proposals as Medicare for All, free college tuition, offering a job with benefits to every American, and revitalizing labor unions.
