The Democratic presidential field is about to get even more crowded as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is forming an exploratory committee for a 2020 presidential campaign.
The AP reported:
Several people familiar with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s plans say the New York Democrat is expected to take steps toward launching a presidential campaign in the coming days by forming an exploratory committee.
One person says Gillibrand will likely announce her intentions ahead of a trip to Iowa this weekend. She will be a guest Tuesday night on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Sen. Gillibrand is another non-marquee name who needs to get out on the campaign trail early. The Democratic field could be so crowded that it will be difficult for any of the lower tier candidates to break out. The size of the GOP field in 2016 benefitted Trump because the chaotic nature of the primary largely kept the field divided and distracted.
The Democratic field is already crowded that is without some of the big names like Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke, and Kamala Harris who could run. Many of these candidates who are announcing now won’t make it to Iowa. Many more will have their campaigns ended before Super Tuesday.
Gillibrand is running, but it will take a lot of work for her to get any traction in a Democratic field that is growing by the day.
