Donald Trump‘s presidency has reached a “danger zone” that the White House likely won’t be able to recover from, according to presidential historian Jon Meacham.
During an interview on MSNBC‘s Hardball with Chris Matthews, Meacham said that Trump‘s approval rating may be in the 35+ percent range right now, but it’s likely to continue falling.
“When you get in the 20s, you’re really done,” the historian said. “When you’re in the mid-30s, it’s lethargic, and I think I have a feeling it’s going to begin to go down even farther.”

Meacham said:
[Trump] is paying the price for having invented this as he’s gone along. And to say that he goes day to day I think is an insult to people who go day to day. I think it’s a minute to minute thing, and it seems to me there’s no clear path to getting a presidency that is at about 35% or so approval rating, which is a danger zone, as you know, when you get in the 20s, you’re really done. When you’re in the mid-30s, it’s lethargic, and I think I have a feeling it’s going to begin to go down even farther.
It appears that Donald Trump‘s government shutdown was the final nail in his political coffin. Throwing a tantrum over a wall and preventing hundreds of thousands of Americans from receiving a paycheck turns out to be pretty unpopular.
Of course, Trump‘s approval rating has never been strong. Since taking office, he has been one of the most unpopular presidents in modern history. Still, it’s always been consistent.
Over the past several weeks, though, we’ve seen a pretty clear decline in his numbers, signaling that the American people are finally fed up with Donald Trump.
When voters reach that point, as Jon Meacham said on Monday, it’s hard for any president to bounce back – much less a president in increasingly dire legal trouble.
