Senate Democrats have enough votes to pass a resolution blocking Trump’s national emergency, which will set up a showdown over a Trump veto.

Sen. Duckworth told ABC’s This Week, “I think we do. Now, whether we have enough for an override and veto, that’s a different story. But frankly, I think there’s enough people in the Senate who are concerned that what he’s doing is robbing from the military and the DOD to go build this wall that, you know, is really not even the best way to fight the crisis that he’s talking — you know, seeming that there’s one at the border.”

Trump will veto the resolution blocking his national emergency, but it is a big deal that the Democrats have enough Senate Republican votes to get this resolution to Trump’s desk for a veto. The days of Republicans in Congress protecting Trump from everything appear to be over. The math matters on this vote. One of the most important things to watch for is the number of Republicans who vote to block this ‘national emergency.’ If more than ten Republicans cross over, Trump has a real problem. It is unlikely, but if 20 Republicans cross over and vote with Democrats that would give Democrats enough votes to override a Trump veto.
Democrats will have to show in court that Congress doesn’t want Trump’s ‘national emergency,’ and the best way to do that is to pass the resolution in the Senate that will show judges that Trump is violating the Constitution and defying the will of Congress. There is more at stake in the Senate vote than overriding the veto.
The first step in building the case against Trump’s bogus wall emergency is passing the resolution blocking Trump’s actions.
