Former Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke says he and his family have made a final decision regarding their plans for 2020 and they will announce them soon, according to a new report in The Dallas Morning News.

In a statement to the newspaper, O’Rourke said, “Amy and I have made a decision about how we can best serve our country.”

“We are excited to share it with everyone soon,” he added.

The Dallas Morning News added that O’Rourke “likely will announce a campaign for president soon,” citing people in the former Democratic congressman’s circle.

O’Rourke has ruled out another Senate run

For weeks, there has been speculation that O’Rourke may take another shot at the U.S. Senate in 2020 after he nearly unseated incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz last November.

But the same report notes that he has ruled out a second Senate campaign in which he would have faced off against Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

Ruling out a second bid for the Senate seems to leave one option for O’Rourke: a campaign for the presidency.

Trump should fear Beto O’Rourke

In deep red Texas, Beto O’Rourke came within three percentage points of defeating Ted Cruz. If he can build a national campaign that was as unique and energizing as his Senate operation in Texas, he will be a formidable threat to Donald Trump.

A recent poll showed O’Rourke beating Trump by a solid six percentage points nationally, and that’s before he has formally introduced himself to the country on a large scale.

Not to mention: O’Rourke showed earlier this month that he can beat Trump on his signature issue of immigration. Not only did he turn out more people to his rally on the border in El Paso, but he masterfully tore the president’s immigration lies to shreds.

In an already large field of Democratic hopefuls, Beto O’Rourke is likely to thrust himself into the top tier of candidates just by announcing his campaign in the coming weeks.
