Beto O’Rourke Puts Trump To Shame With Plan To Require Monthly Town Halls For Cabinet Officials

A new proposal from Beto O’Rourke would force his Cabinet officials, if he’s elected president, to hold monthly town hall meetings where they would take unscripted questions from the American people.

If elected, the Democratic congressman said he would sign an executive order requiring the meetings “to listen to you and to be accountable to you so that we deliver for you.”

“Not a handpicked audience. Not a theatrical production,” O’Rourke said at the We the People Summit in Washington. “But a real, live, town hall meeting — not just to answer questions, but to be held accountable.”

The proposal tracks with O’Rourke’s time in Congress and his young presidential campaign.

As CNN notes, during his six terms in the House, O’Rourke held town hall-style meetings every month. Throughout the past couple weeks, he has taken extensive questions from audiences in early primary states, from Iowa to New Hampshire.

O’Rourke said he wants a Cabinet that “reflects the diversity, the ingenuity, the genius of a country of 330 million people.”

“We will not have people who have corporate interests serving this country in those positions of public trust,” he said. “There’ll only be people who have the public interest in those positions of public trust.”

The proposal puts Trump to shame

Meanwhile, in the current White House, Donald Trump’s Cabinet looks like a retreat for Wall Street executives, as Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown often says.

Time and again, we’ve seen Trump’s Cabinet officials taking cues from their boss and using their positions to enrich themselves – from Tom Price to Ben Carson to Scott Pruitt to Wilbur Ross to Ryan Zinke and more.

If enacted, Beto O’Rourke’s proposal would mark a major shift from the current state of the president’s cabinet, where out-of-touch secretaries view taxpayer dollars as their own personal piggy bank.

In the stroke of a pen, it would do more to “drain the swamp” than Trump ever did.
