Trump campaign thinks African-American unemployment proves Trump’s not racist

STEPHANOPOULOS: Let’s get a response now from the Trump campaign. Mercedes Schlapp, senior adviser, joins us now. And Mercedes, thank you for joining us this morning. I want to get you to respond to Congressman Cummings. He says President Trump is racist.

MERCEDES SCHLAPP, TRUMP 2020 CAMPAIGN SENIOR ADVISER: Look, I have worked with President Trump for two years and he is not a racist. He’s a compassionate man whose policies have focused on the minority community. I mean, you look at the fact that the president has pushed and implementing the opportunity zones that helps low-income distressed communities across the country, including Baltimore.

You look at the fact that the unemployment numbers for African Americans is at its lowest, for Hispanics at its lowest. I mean, he is a results-oriented president who is focused on helping uplift all Americans, including blacks, including Hispanics. And I have to say I’ve been with him in the room with all these — with all these different communities and he does stay focused on ensuring that we’re implementing the right policies for all Americans.

African-American Unemployment Has Been Increasing

The White House needs to get some new talking points because since hitting a record low, African-American unemployment has been increasing. The reality is that Trump has nothing to do with African-American unemployment. He just happened to be sitting in the White House as the number was dropping. Trump has offered no policies to lower African-American unemployment, nor is he ever concerned about the issue. It never comes up unless Trump wants to invoke his stale and inaccurate claim of historically low African-American unemployment.

The African-American unemployment rate has nothing to do with Trump’s racist views. Just because black people have jobs doesn’t mean that the president isn’t a racist.

It is telling that the only counterpoint the Trump campaign could come up with is the unemployment rate, which is a statistic that Trump deserves no credit for.

Obama had the biggest drop in African-American unemployment in history.

While fact-checking Trump, the AP pointed out, “The most dramatic drop in black unemployment came under President Barack Obama, when it fell from a recession high of 16.8 percent in March 2010 to 7.8 percent in January 2017.” Trump is trying to take credit for another Obama accomplishment.

The African-American unemployment rate can’t hide Donald Trump’s obvious racism.
