Trump's ego cannot allow him to accept that he will NEVER come close to the continued popularity and respect the planet has for Obama. Trump voters are most definitely punishing America for daring to elect a black man to the WH, twice. I was foolish to believe electing Obama meant that we had finally turned the page on our country's horrific racism.

Tired Nana, I feel exactly the same way you do! I really did think we had gotten past the bigotry and hate and understanding that diversity is good for our country. I remember the race riots in 1968 as I was a junior in high school. I had hoped and prayed we had moved beyond that. It breaks my heart to see what is happening.

I was so incredibly proud when we elected Obama, and the respect we garnered around the world. Being a USAID brat, I fought against the "ugly American" trope wherever we were posted. When I came back to the States at age 17, I was shocked by the overt racism, even where we lived in the D.C. suburbs. It feels like America has only gotten more hateful & more intolerant. I'm too old to make a difference now, but I am terrified about the America my grandchildren are living in.

To me all roads lead to Trump's mental disorders, mainly his malignant narcissism. All his actions are motivated by that. It explains everything he does. He's a master manipulator all about HIMSELF. Should never have been in any position of power.

I can testify that this European felt joy when Obama was elected.

Finally our American friends had overcome what we saw as your main handicap.

In the current dark days, let's not forget that it happened (twice). There is not only rot in the USA, but also good will and hope. And a growing, rightful anger.

Nor that Obama won a Nobel prize which Trump hungers for. Nor that the obamas have a media production company that has won an Academy Award and two Primetime Emmys. Nor has obama has written more than 10 books, most best sellers. Nor does trump. get speaking engagement invites from reputable events. Nor do most heads of state want to be near trump: see King Harold, Germany’s Mertz, Carney, just about every NATO head of state. Anyway, Trump will go down in history as the most disliked/hated US president. He’s currently rated #44 worst per the Sienna Presidential Rankings. Obama is #11. Biden is #19! That has to piss him off

I think President Obama is playing by the old rules of decorum - he should be much more aggressive and proactive. I think that he and the other people who have been aligned by Trump should file a defamation lawsuit against him and any media who promotes these lies.

Obama is smart enough to know that any action he would take against Trump while this administration holds all the cards would be futile. Any judgment Obama could win in a court of law would only be overturned by our fascist majority in the not-so-Supreme Court.

That's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We need to get back to confirming justices who are truly unbiased, and impeaching these fascist, hand-picked for bias justices currently occupying the Supreme Court.

These justices are crooked as hell and need their comeuppance. And they are so biased that they should be thrown off the Court by their asses. Thomas, Alito, Roberts and little Brett K. What jerks they all are. No way do they deserve to be on the Supreme Court.

I’d like someone to put these people in a dark closet with no way out. They are horrible, tragic, pathetic takers of bribes.

Trump would proclaim presidential immunity for himself to ward off slander claims while denying it for Obama’s phantom, make-believe “coup” attempt that never happened. Still, I agree Dems need to fight back more aggressively, especially with satire pointing out MAGA’s logical fallacies and contradictions while ensuring people get a good laugh at Trump’s expense.

Dr. Lynne, I agree. Rome is burning. Obama is running around shouting fire fire fire! He should be carrying a water bucket. One of, and perhaps his greatest fault is being far too timid. He as courage, but often lacks outright boldness!

Expand full comment
Elizabeth J. Sampson's avatar

There is not an ounce of timidity in Obama. What you mistakenly think is timid, is class and intelligence. You don’t have to yell the loudest to win. Even with constant maligning by Trump, he remains a poised and incredibly articulate. He and his wife are so much smarter than Trump, straight from Harvard Law, and Trump can’t even read anymore as his staff has to act out the news as if he is watching Fox tv. ( this is absolutely true and has been written about everywhere.)

For the most part I agree; however, he did not evaluate the Ukraine situation accurately. This gave Putin the impression he could take over Ukraine whenever he desired. He talked tough but did not follow through. This emboldened not only Putin , but also Iran and Syria. He was afraid of the thing that gave Trump a platform. The never ending wars. His Benghazi response was also not convincingly strong. He was too often managing his image as having class and intelligence. Yes he has class and intelligence, but real leaders have to be bold and unconcerned about public opinion, when necessary. Winston Churchill understood this. He was not well liked, but history has treated him with more respect than Neville Chamberlain.

I'd love Obama to file a defamation lawsuit, but he's too classy to get in the mud with Trump, even if that's the only thing Trump understands -- fighting dirty.

Changing the subject: What should really be a felony is what Trump is doing to the Oval Office. It looks like he found a half-off sale at Hobby Lobby and bought a cart full of cheap, tacky decor items. The White House isn't a palace. It's the people's House.

I voted twice for Obama. I have never regretted those votes and still don’t. Trump has a real “skill” (if you want to call it that) at projecting onto others his own failings, flaws, and insanity. That and lying about anything and everything, even when there’s no reason at all to do so and the lie is obvious, are the foundation of his “success.” The man has an almost religious (in a very bad sense) dedication to self-promotion and seems to think that he can’t win unless everybody else loses. For him, a win-win situation can never occur because he can’t succeed unless and until everyone else fails. Nixon wasn’t much as a person or a president but he was a veritable paragon compared to Trump.
