It’s Mitt Romney not Barack Obama Who is the Real Un-American Candidate

Using anxiety to influence public opinion and actions of others towards some specific end by repetitious exaggeration is fear mongering, and it has the potential of becoming a vicious circle with no positive outcome regardless a person’s good intentions. When politicians use scare tactics in a public forum, it is more likely than not they are concealing an ulterior motive that is not in the public’s interest, or they would be forthcoming and truthful to convince their intended audience that their agenda is the best course possible to guarantee that America maintains its position as the greatest country in the world.

Republicans thrive on lying to frighten Americans, and their candidate for president has spent the past six months painting a picture of a country in decline to convince voters to return to Bush policies that nearly destroyed the economy and embroiled the nation in two unnecessary and unfunded wars. The Romney campaign has promoted the fallacious idea that President Obama is not a “real American” to frighten ignorant voters, and that he is the sole cause of America’s economic woes that only Romney can remedy by arguing his business acumen and racial purity are his best assets. However, more than anything, what Romney has revealed during the campaign is that not only does he not understand America, he is un-American and certainly “not one of us.”

There is no shortage of commentary on why Romney cannot connect or relate to the American people, and it is true his wealth plays an important role, but more than that, his behavior reveals a man who does everything real Americans would never consider. Most Americans believe they have a duty to take care of their fellow citizens whether it is for disaster relief, feeding hungry children and seniors, or taking care of our brave men and women who put their lives on the line, but Romney pledges to slash social safety nets and give Veterans a coupon to buy health insurance instead of strengthening the highly successful Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA), and it is all to pay for tax cuts for himself. A real American would not take money from veterans and the poor to enrich themselves, but Romney is not a real American, and he has done everything in his power to avoid serving and supporting this country.

When Romney hides his money in Swiss banks, offshore tax havens, Sankaty Advisors LLC, and suspicious IRAs to avoid paying his fair share of taxes, he is not supporting the economy or the government. Every other real American pays their taxes that support the economy, military, roads, bridges and agencies that keep every citizen safe, and although they may not like paying taxes, they realize that it is part of being a real American and that they help keep this country safe and secure. Willard does not believe in contributing to America, and although he contributes to his church, he does so out of religious obligation and to get a tax write-off.

Americans are basically good and honest people who take responsibility for their actions whether good or bad, and they certainly are not inclined to take credit for someone else’s accomplishments, but Romney has taken credit for saving the Olympics that would have failed if not for taxpayers putting up $1.5 billion dollars. Six months ago he tried to take credit for saving the automobile industry that he was willing to let go bankrupt just two years earlier, and on Friday he blamed the President for outsourcing American jobs to China that was his practice at Bain Capital.

Real Americans believe in hard work, and that if one perseveres and plays by the rules, they can aspire to a decent life and security in their golden years, but Romney has spent his entire career getting rich off of other people’s money and hard work only to eliminate their jobs to enrich himself. The wealth he has accumulated and hidden offshore did not come from hard work, but from raiding companies, bankrupting them, using a team of fraudulent lawyers to steal company assets, and leaving unemployed Americans and broken communities in his wake. To top it off, he lies about when he officially stopped leading the company that destroyed lives and jobs to avoid being connected to fraudulent bankruptcy charges.

Generally speaking, Americans do not lie, cheat, or steal, and it may be because of their religious inclinations, but it is more than likely because of their consciences. That just is not the case with Romney and whether he lies because Mormons encourage it, or to inflate his own record, he is becoming renowned for being a pathological liar that proves he is no more a Christian than he is an ethical business man and certainly not an honest American.

What defines Romney most as not being a real American is his disregard for citizens who are not white and wealthy. America is an incredibly diverse nation and the greatest majority of Americans celebrate the fact the people from all over the world emigrated to this country to find a better life and contribute to building America into an exceptional nation. Throughout the campaign, Romney has alienated minorities and spent plenty of time demeaning African Americans that he portrays as lazy people looking for “free money,” and in the process is driving a wedge between Americans when unity is what has defined this country in times of peril and times of prosperity.

Willard Romney is un-American because he is not interested in its people, its government, or keeping it safe and secure. He fails to understand that, unlike him, Americans do not lie, cheat, steal, frighten easily, or take credit for someone else’s accomplishments, but they do take responsibility for supporting our troops, honoring our veterans, and contributing to the common good and national defense. Romney is the polar opposite of any real American most people know, and instead of celebrating the things that make America great, he has spent the past six months maligning education, law enforcement, social safety nets, and especially regulations that keep all Americans safe, and it is a constant mystery why any American would support a candidate who clearly has no idea what it means to be a real American. If pundits really want to know why Romney cannot connect with the American people, they should look past the surface to see it is not because of his wealth, but because everything that defines an American is foreign to him.
