President Obama slammed Republicans for shutting down the government because they lost the 2012 election. He also told Republicans, ‘You don’t get to extract a ransom for doing your job.’

President Obama first explained what the economic impact of a government shutdown will be. The president said, “The shutdown will have real economic impact on real people right away.” Obama said that a shutdown does not have to happen. He said that it is all preventable if the House decides to fund the government. He called out House Republicans for trying to save face with the extremist parts of their party that they made impossible promises to.

Obama made it clear that a government shutdown isn’t going to stop the ACA. The president said, “The Affordable Care act is moving forward. The funding is already in place. You can’t shut it down.” He laid out the benefits of Obamacare, and said that starting tomorrow Americans who have been denied coverage will be able to afford quality coverage. The president said, “The important part of the Affordable Care Act takes place tomorrow no matter what the House decides to do” President Obama called the ACA the uninsured’s best opportunity to get some security and relief. The president said that Republicans want him to sacrifice the healthcare of millions of Americans, and in return they will fund the government for a few more months. He asked if anyone really believes that we won’t be having this same fight a few months from now if Republicans get what they want now.

The president later dropped the hammer, “One faction of one party in one house of Congress in one branch of government doesn’t get to shutdown the government to refight the results of an election.” He added that Republicans don’t get to extract a ransom for doing their jobs.

He concluded that Congress needs to keep our government open. pay our bills on time, and never ever threaten the full faith and credit of the United States of America.

President Obama did something big in this statement. He revealed the real Republican motivation for shutting down the government. Republicans are angry that they lost the election in 2012. They are angry that the Supreme Court ruled the ACA to be constitutional. They are angry that Barack Obama is still the president.

They are channeling this anger into taking destructive action against the economy. Republicans want to make sure that the American people pay for their vote to reelect the president last November. House Republicans are out to ruin Obama’s legacy. If they think a government shutdown will ruin Obama, they’ll do it. If it will take not raising the debt limit and cause a default, they have no problem with that too. Mostly though, they want to make the people that Mitt Romney called the 47% suffer for supporting this president.

House Republicans think that they are punishing you for reelecting Obama, but what they are really doing is costing themselves their seats in 2014.
